TWO cats were rescued by firefighters after the pets ran back into a burning house in Sheffield.

The cats, along with a dog, were initially led to safety by their owners from the house on Burnside Avenue, Meersbrook – but ran back into the property before firefighters arrived. Crew members searched the house to find the cats and carried them outside unharmed to their relieved owners.

The fire broke out when a blanket caught fire in the tumble drier in the kitchen.

The owners of the house closed the kitchen door to limit the spread of the flames, but firefighters said the kitchen was destroyed.

There was also smoke damage to the dining room next door.

The property had a smoke alarm fitted, which sounded to draw attention to the blaze.

Firefighters spent around an hour at the scene at around 10.15pm on Sunday.
