SHEFFIELD University students are being urged to check their bank statements after a hidden camera-type device was found on a cash machine on the campus.

The device was discovered attached to The Co-operative bank ATM outside the Students’ Union building on Western Bank on Thursday morning and reported to police and removed.

Staff and university students have all received an email warning them of the discovery and advising them to check their statements for any unauthorised withdrawals.

A South Yorkshire Police spokeswoman said: “Just after 8am on Thursday police received a report of a tamper at an ATM machine within the grounds of the student campus at Western Bank. The device was removed immediately and inquiries are ongoing to identify the offender.

“Incidents of this type are rare, however police would advise members of the public if they notice anything unusual about any cash machine they are about to use to report it to the police straightaway.

“Anyone using cash machines should be vigilant and aware. Always cover the keypad and check other people in the queue are a reasonable distance away.”

Anyone with information should call South Yorkshire Police on 0114 220 2020 quoting incident 188 of August 11 or call Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
