A SPORTS club has received a cash boost to help it encourage more people to take to the water.

The Co-operative Community Fund awarded the Manvers Waterfront Boat Club in Wath, near Rotherham with £1,800 towards buying new kayaks and paddles.

It is hoped the equipment can be used to help extend the Manvers Lake-based club’s work in the local community and increase participation in its primary sports – which are kayaking and canoeing – while benefiting existing members.

Leaders are also working on promoting other activities such as angling, sailing, swimming and windsurfing,

Chris Hawkesworth, chairman of Manvers Waterfront Boat Club, said: “We are thrilled with the generous grant we have received.

“We are passionate about improving access to canoeing and kayaking for more children, larger-built people and people with disabilities, and this funding will help us to buy the right equipment for these groups of people.”
