Cash boost for artists
ARTISTS in Sheffield have been given a boost with a series of cash injections dished out in the latest round of Arts Council grants.
Six projects have been given cheques ranging from 1,720 and 17,600.
Visual artist Simon Le Ruez received the biggest grant to fund a year-long residency programme in Berlin, giving him chance to expose his work to a wider international audience.
Esther Johnson, a film and media artist, will use her 5,000 to create a new film and photography exhibition about the Japanese custom of viewing the cherry blossoms.
Sheffield's Cultural Industries Quarter Agency recieved 5,000 to help creative and digital industries in priority areas of South Yorkshire.
Designer silversmith Katey Felton has been awarded 2,980 to hold workshops in schools while Tracey Shibli will use her 1,720 to hold a series of workshops creating illustrations for a songbook to be performed by the Sheffield Young Singers at the city's Children's Festival in June.
And photographer Anton Want has been given 5,000 so he can record the responses of young women asked: "What is your ambition?"
Andy Carver, executive director for Arts Council England in Yorkshire, said: "We want to get great art to everyone and these lottery awards will bring excellent art activities to many people in South Yorkshire."
