Carrying on the effort
THE Star has helped a reusable shopping bag scheme raise more than £20,000 for Sheffield Children's Hospital, city schools and South Yorkshire Flood Disaster Relief Fund in its first year.
Our shop on York Street has shifted hundreds of eco-friendly Charibags since they went on sale in February, helping Chariband reach sales of nearly 20,000.
Chariband was set up by Loxley mum Glenda Kirby as a 'thank you' after her 11-year-old son, Chester, was rushed into intensive care with breathing problems.
The Star has backed the firm, which donates net profits to charity, since launching our campaign for a tax on disposable carriers to cut consumption and raise awareness of a looming environmental crisis.
Jackie Capper, The Star's front counter co-ordinator, said the bags, with the slogan 'Sheffielders Care' had been a hit with customers.
Glenda said charibag sales had potentially prevented three million diposable carriers entering circulation.
She added: "I'd like to say a big thanks to The Star and Sheffielders for supporting local charities and helping to save the environment."
