SUPPORTERS of a Sheffield charity are preparing to be ‘gunged’ for a good cause.

The group behind SAFE@LAST, which helps children and young people at risk of running away when they feel they have nowhere else to turn, are to be covered in slime on Sunday.

Victims will be drenched as part of a carnival day arranged by Sheffield Eagles to mark the start of the 2012 Championship rugby league season at Don Valley Stadium in Attercliffe.

They include Miss South Yorkshire finalists and Eagles player Dane McDonald, as well as local bank staff.

All are being sponsored and will be collecting donations on the day of the match with the aim of raising 1p for every young person who ran away from home in 2011.

SAFE@LAST provides a helpline, ongoing one-to-one support, prevention and education work and is the only such children’s refuge in England.

Eagles host Swinton Lions on the opening day, at 3pm.
