A SHEFFIELD caretaker and his wife were given a big send off when they retired from their duties at a city primary school.

Dave Wheeler and his better half Anne stood down at Dobcroft Infants in Millhouses after 10 years in the post, though Dave has worked in the service for nearly two decades.

But he will continue to be a familiar face around school – he will carry on working in the kitchen as an assistant cook even though he’s now reached the age of 65.

A special assembly was held for the couple, the highlight of which was the presentation of a large book containing paintings and drawings created by every child in the school.

Parents presented £200, the proceeds of a collection, while there were also flowers and champagne for the couple from the staff.

“The pupils also recited poems and performed a series of mimes of all the jobs Dave carried out, such as unlocking the gates, carrying out repairs around the school and shovelling snow,” said school administrator Judy Douglas.

“And there was a special song too, set to the tune of What Shall We Do With A Drunken Sailor. Everyone enjoyed joining in with the song, especially the chorus.

“A lot of the children enjoyed it so much they said they were going to go home and sing it to their mums and dads.

“Dave and Anne mean a lot to the children as they see them around school so often, and Dave is in the kitchen every day,” she said.

Dave has also been a well known face as he and Anne have lived in a house on the premises, though the property has now been taken over by his successor.
