THIS was the dramatic moment flames engulfed a car which had pulled on to the hard shoulder of the M1 near Sheffield.

Star reader Jim Perry captured the moment from a passing vehicle, as the fire took hold, destroying the Renault Scenic people carrier.

Drivers travelling north on the M1 were caught in a traffic jam caused by the fire.

Fire crews from Rotherham and Aston Park fought the blaze, which happened at about 11.34am on Sunday on the northbound carriageway between junction 32 near Thurcroft and 33 at Catcliffe.

A South Yorkshire Fire Service spokeswoman said: “The fire was quite large and there was a lot of smoke. Fortunately, the occupants of the vehicle managed to get out safely and nobody was hurt.”
