LORD Mayor of Sheffield Coun Sylvia Dunkley was joined by Sheffield’s Rabbi Yonosan Golomb for a poignant candle-lighting ceremony in the Winter Garden to mark Holocaust Memorial Day.

The event accompanied the launch of a collection of posters in the Winter Garden commemorating national Holocaust Memorial Day, produced by the Holocaust Memorial Day Trust.

This year marks the 67th anniversary of the liberation of Auschwitz-Birkenau, the Nazi concentration and extermination camp, the site of the largest mass murder in history.

Other events which took place to honour those who died during the Holocaust included the signing by city MPs of the Book of Commitment in the House of Commons.

Meg Munn, MP for Heeley, said: “I encourage people to join with me in committing to ‘speaking up and speaking out’ against prejudice.”

Sheffield Central MP Paul Blomfield MP said: “I visited Auschwitz-Birkenau four years ago and it was a deeply moving experience. Hatred can poison any community unless we challenge it.”
