Cancer survivors are tickled pink

A BREAST cancer survivor has played a commanding role in a pink platoon - set up to inspire others to 'join the fight for women's survival'.

Pippa Jones, aged 52, a lecturer at Sheffield Hallam University, joined a squad of celebrities, cancer survivors and patients, doctors, scientists and fundraisers for a symbolic march through the streets of London for the a new Cancer Research UK campaign to fight breast cancer.

The sports lecturer, of Bamford, rubbed shoulders with celebs including Anne Nolan - the eldest of the Nolan sisters, and Green Goddess fitness guru Diana Moran, both of whom are breast cancer survivors, as well as TV presenter and singer Mica Paris.

Pippa was among 46 recruits representing the 46,000 women diagnosed with breast cancer every year in the UK.

Dressed head-to-toe in pink and blue camouflage to reflect Cancer Research UK's new campaign, each hoped to rally people everywhere to the charity's cause. The march highlighted vital weapons in the fight against the disease - breast cancer awareness, screening for women over 50, and fundraising for Cancer Research UK's lifesaving work.

Pippa said: "I was honoured to join Cancer Research UK's pink platoon and raise awareness of breast cancer and the strides being made to help women like me.

"By joining forces with other women who have been affected by the disease, I felt I was making a stand to show that, together, we can beat cancer."

The senior lecturer in PE, Sports Development and Sports Coaching at Sheffield Hallam was diagnosed with breast cancer in July 2003.

After chemotherapy to shrink her tumour Pippa had a mastectomy, then a course of radiotherapy. She has just finished five years of the drug Tamoxifen.

Pippa, who lives with her partner Denry and their son, Joel, 12, said: "Once you have been diagnosed, you quickly learn there is hope - largely due to the amazing progress that has been made, both in diagnosis and treatment by organisations such as Cancer Research UK."
