A MYSTERIOUS landing of a Chinook helicopter near a Sheffield estate left residents scratching their heads, as nobody was able to explain what it was doing there.

The military double-rotor troop carrier landed on open ground in Pitsmoor at around 2pm, staying on the ground for about 10 minutes before flying away, low over Neepsend and Stannington.

An armed forces spokesman said he had no record of a scheduled flight into Sheffield yesterday, but said it might have been a training exercise.

Dozens of residents watched the large aircraft land between Pye Bank Road and Woodside Lane, and drivers stopped their cars and took out their cameras.

City councillor Harry Harpham, who was driving past, said: “It was a fantastic sight. People were saying the pilot was looking at his map.”
