We’re halfway there!

The Star’s campaign to sign up 12,000 new organ donors from South Yorkshire and Derbyshire has recruited more than 7,600 lifesavers since its launch in January.

Transplant survivor Dave Horner - whose wife Karina gave him one of her kidneys as he suffered with polycystic kidney disease - said the news was ‘absolutely amazing’.

The 44-year-old added: “It’s great news because it means more people can have the second chance that I have had.”

Dad-of-two Dave will compete in five events in the Westfield Health British Transplant Games, taking part at venues across Sheffield in August.

The Gift of Life campaign aims to get 12,000 more Sheffield folk on the NHS Organ Donor Register before the inspirational games begin.

Dave, who has returned to work following his transplant, has persuaded colleagues, friends and family members to sign up and share their wishes with family.

Dave, from Broom, in Rotherham, added: “I’m out there selling the campaign at work and at football and everything.”

Businesses and transplant patients have backed the Gift of Life campaign.

And the Transplant Games are shaping up to be the biggest ever when they arrive in the city.

Event director John Timms said: “Reaching the halfway mark shows that the games are working and the message that we are sharing with everybody is really making a difference.

“I would encourage more people to sign up and share their wishes with their families.”
