There’s something fishy going on in South Yorkshire – as people all over the region head to their local chippy to celebrate National Chip Week.

Fish and chips are top of the takeaways for hungry families, which is why The Star has teamed up with Handsworth Fish Bar to dish up a great reader offer.

Sheffielders can bag a free portion of chips from the popular chippy on Handsworth Road, Sheffield.

And the National Chip week celebrations don’t stop there – as today we are also launching our annual Chip Shop of the Year competition.

High-frying fish and chip shops across the region are being urged to sign up to the contest for their chance of fame and glory.

But what is it about fish and chips which make South Yorkshire residents’ mouths water?

Handsworth Fish Bar’s Roy Dunkerley says it’s the perfect combination of simplicity and quality.

“Our fish is just fish and our potatoes are just potatoes,” Roy explained.

“We don’t use any chemicals or E numbers, it’s all good, wholesome stuff and that’s the big attraction of fish and chips.”

Roy, aged 61, has been running Handsworth Fish Bar with his daughter Ami, 33, since 2000.

And it’s a real family affair, with wife Carol, 60, taking care of the business side of things.

Roy says the Fish Bar has a couple of tricks up its sleeve which keeps customers coming back for seconds.

“We have a special mix of oil and dripping which gives us the traditional taste without it being too greasy,” he said.

“If you are just using dripping, it can leave a film on the inside of your mouth which isn’t very pleasant. We mix oil in to stop that happening.

“We also have a special, secret batter recipe that we don’t divulge to anybody. But apart from that, the main thing that we go for is the quality.

“You can’t make a silk purse out of a sow’s ear so we buy the best fish and potatoes and prepare everything fresh, in-house on the day.”

Even South Yorkshire Fire and Rescue is getting behind local chippies.

Group manager Kev Ronan said: “Everyone at the fire service would agree that proper chips have a great taste.

“Unfortunately, we see on a regular basis how people have sustained serious burns and huge damage to their homes by using chip pans.

“South Yorkshire has some great chip shops, which are a safe place to get your chips fix, and we fully support The Star’s quest to find the best.”
