It’s a Shaw thing – this South Yorkshire chippy is batter than the rest!
Family-run Shaw’s Fish and Chips in Killamarsh has been named The Star’s Chip Shop of the Year 2014.
The high-frying chippy impressed voters by serving up the perfect combination of great service and top notch food from their premises on Bridge Street.
Owner Richard Shaw, who runs the shop with his wife Natalie and cousins Sam and Cameron, said the whole family was delighted to be the catch of the year.
He said: “It’s fantastic, it’s brilliant news.
“We are well chuffed. We’re all family here and we’re all over the moon to have won.”
Richard’s family have been serving hungry customers with mouth-watering fish and chips for generations.
He brought the family business to Killamarsh from the Worksop area in December 2012 and they’ve relished filling hungry bellies ever since.
“All our customers are really friendly and we can’t ask for more than that,” said 33-year-old Richard.
“I think they like the way we do things here. We don’t buy any cheap ingredients – everything is top quality.
“We use line-caught fish from Grimsby and British potatoes.
“We have a secret recipe for our batter and we also do our own homemade pies, which are really popular.
“We make everything from scratch – from our own doner and chicken meat to our own fish cakes.”
Richard and the team were presented with their Chippy of the Year 2014 plaque by The Star’s deputy editor Rob Hollingworth.
Rob said: “We congratulate Shaw’s for proving the most popular chippy among our readers. Star readers have got great taste so Shaw’s should be delighted that our readers think they are the best.
“The Chip Shop of the Year contest is one of the most popular competitions we run at The Star, with hundreds of votes flooding in, so to come top of the pile is a great honour and much deserved.”
