Calm approach is right thing

THE swift and decisive actions of health professionals dealing with an outbreak of swine flu at a city junior school are reassuring and encouraging.

They show that there is a well organised response for dealing with the illness, and that local services are more than able to deal with the situation, at least on the scale which is presently being dealt with in Sheffield. In particular, this professionalism will be welcomed by parents of children at the school who naturally will be deeply concerned for their youngsters.

So far seven cases have been confirmed but every child at the school, and most of their immediate families, are being treated with Tami-Flu tablets to build up their immunity to this potentially fatal strain of the disease.

In medical terms, the symptoms being shown by infected children are mild. But to parents, their children seem 'really ill', said one adult.

However, the level-headed reaction of parents fits well with the calm approach of health professionals to give confidence in Sheffield that the city is well prepared to deal with this illness, at least in these early stages.

Harnessing internet to check on kids

THE technology of the modern day age is being harnessed by South Yorkshire police who want to beef up their intelligence when dealing with young people, including those posturing as members of gangs.

The force is recruiting someone to trawl through social networking websites to sift through the information posted there by young people in the hope that it will give them details which could be used in operations against trouble causers.

The internet has become increasingly important to young people and it is a sad truth that those with ill intent on their minds are among those who have used it as a means of keeping in touch with like-minded individuals.

The police's determination to keep pace with this is welcomed and we hope it will help officers keep youth crime in check - and give them an invaluable insight into the way today's youth culture is progressing.
