Calls for cash help in quarry wrangle

CAMPAIGNERS are urging the Government to use public cash to stop quarrying in the Peak District.

Friends of the Peak District met last week with the Minister for Rural Affairs, Barry Gardiner, to urge the Government to help the Peak District National Park Authority to buy out quarry owners and stop them digging huge holes into the countryside.

Andy Tickle, head of planning and campaigning for the Friends, said a suitable compensation package would halt the destruction of the Longstone Edge landscape.

He said the potential environmental threats from most of these sites could be lifted by National Park Authorities using existing laws.

Quarry bosses say they are working within the law and will be looking to a public inquiry next week to allow them to restart the work at Backdale.

The public inquiry starts at Calver Village Hall on Tuesday and could determine the fate of quarrying in the Peak District for decades to come.

Ruth Chambers, acting chief executive at the Council for National Parks, added: "The Government has solutions within its power and it should act now to avert further damage at Longstone Edge."

Friends of the Peak District and the Council for National Parks say that revoking the quarry permission covering Backdale and Longstone Edge Quarries would not result in the opening of a 'Pandora's Box' of compensation claims from quarry owners.
