SHEFFIELD MP Meg Munn has called for a change in the law to ensure people queuing at polling stations by 10pm have the right to vote.
The Labour Heeley MP said she is concerned the proposal has still not been implemented when it was recommended by the Electoral Commission after chaos in the 2010 General Election.
Problems occurred in seats including Sheffield Hallam, represented by Deputy Prime Minister Nick Clegg, where hundreds of people were unable to vote as polling stations struggled to cope with the turnout.
The commission said: “There would be clear benefits if the rules for all UK elections were revised to provide clarity that those who are present, or in a queue, at a polling station at the close of poll are entitled to vote.”
Ms Munn said she was ‘astounded’ the recommendation has not yet become law.
