SHEFFIELD Green Party councillors want the city’s apprenticeship programme to provide opportunities in the green energy industry.

Sheffield Council is to spend £1 million creating 100 apprenticeships at city firms.

Coun Jillian Creasy, Green councillor for Central ward, said: “The government’s Green Deal will come on stream next year so this sector is sure to grow and we should be taking advantage of it.”

The party is also calling on council chiefs to install solar panels on the authority’s buildings to reduce its carbon footprint.
