A Barnsley MP has called for a compulsory jobs guarantee to tackle youth unemployment in his constituency.
Michael Dugher, the MP for Barnsley East, wants to bring in rules for the long-term unemployed to be required to take up a job or training.
Those found to lack the basic English, maths and IT skills needed to get a job would be offered training that they would be expected to take up or lose their benefits. Mr Dugher’s comments come after figures revealed long-term unemployment in Barnsley East has increased by 37 per cent since May 2010.
Mr Dugher said: “We need a compulsory jobs guarantee, which will get any adult out of work for more than two years, or young person out of work for a year, into a job they would be required to take.”
