A busy Doncaster road is set to be closed this weekend to allow for the demolition of a pedestrian footbridge.

The bridge is at the section of Leger Way close to the racecourse, adjacent to Tudor Road.

Leger Way is set to close on three consecutive Sundays this month in order to allow demolition work to take place safely.

The road will be closed between 7am and 9pm on Sunday April, 10; Sunday, April 17 and Sunday, April 24.

A Doncaster Council spokesman said the demolition was taking place because 'the bridge required a lot of repairs and would need further repairs in the future if it remained'.

Assistant Director of Environment, Gill Gillies, said: “Over recent years, the majority of pedestrians have been safely crossing the road at street level and not using the bridge.

"The removal of the bridge structure will improve visibility and the new crossing point will be suitably designed to narrow the road down to improve the prominence of pedestrians and make it easier to cross. The street lighting and road markings will also be improved.

“We are doing all we can to minimise disruption and that is why the works are taking place on Sundays when there are fewer road users. We would like to ask motorists and road users to bear with us during the works.”

According to the local authority, an audit by the council’s road safety team showed it was not used regularly.

After the demolition work is complete dropped kerbs will be installed and the central reserve widened to create a crossing point.

During the road closure, a sign posted diversion will be in place.
