Young business stars ready for city event

Top young businesspeople from across the country will meet in Sheffield on February 15 and 16 for the UK’s biggest gathering of student entrepreneurs.

Sheffield Hallam University and Sheffield College are to host the Student Enterprise Conference, with hundreds of delegates expected to attend.

In recent years the city has become a ‘go-to’ destination for entrepreneurs, due to a growing business start-up community and events like the Made Festival.

“I tried working for someone else but decided it wasn’t for me,” said Nathan Little, a Hallam student who will be at the event.

“I want to be able to control my own time and opportunities so I decided to start up a company.”

Nathan runs Lairds Sporting Directory, a guide to shops and services in the field sports sector, while studying full-time for a politics degree.

Some at the conference will be working through the night as a small number of tech, business and design students participate in a ‘hackathon’ – turning an idea into a business in just 48 hours.

Organiser Hushpreet Dhaliwal said students increasingly wanted to build something that left their own mark.
