Working for start-up of franchise businesses

Keeble Hawson has been appointed legal adviser to a project which aims to encourage more people to set up franchise-based businesses in the Sheffield area.

The law firm, which is affiliated to the British Franchising Association, has been awarded a two-year contract for city development company Crea-tive Sheffield's Franchising Development Project.

At present Sheffield-based franchisees generate annual revenue of 124m, employing 3,500 full and part-time staff. However, research undertaken by Creative Sheffield has indicated there are many more opportunities for new franchisees to come into the marketplace across a wide range of sectors.

Keeble Hawson will support the start-up of an estimated 32 new or resale franchised businesses.

Partner Rosemary Downs said: "Over recent years we have established ourselves as specialists in the field of franchising, advising and supporting both franchisees and franchisors and we're tremendously excited about working on this project with Creative Sheffield.

"The project has been set up to stimulate demand for potential franchising across the city and act as an alternative route of entry for those would-be entrepreneurs who maybe haven't considered franchising as a way of starting up a new business.

"Our responsibility as one of the key partners of the project will be to ensure that those who are taking those first steps fully understand the legal processes involved and provide them with advice on anything from the terms and conditions set down by the franchisor, to the legalities associated with business premises."
