Work begins on M1 crash barrier

Work to improve safety on the M1 in South Yorkshire is set to begin next week.

A section of the steel central reservation barrier at Junction 32 will be replaced with a safer, concrete barrier.

Concrete barriers are stronger and more robust and are also unlikely to require repairs after vehicle impact.

From January 14, there will be a 50mph speed restriction operating between junctions 31 and 33, 24hrs a day, until March 18. During the day, three narrowed lanes will be maintained in each direction. Overnight lane closures may also be required.

Tim Calvert, Highways Agency project manager, said: “During the work we advise road users to plan their journeys to avoid delays.

“And for the safety of drivers and roadworkers we encourage all drivers to drive carefully past the work site.”
