HMV confirmed this morning that it is calling in administrators from Deloitte - meaning 250 stores could close nationwide and putting 4,500 jobs at risk.
The branch on Sheffield’s High Street was open today but the firm is no longer accepting gift vouchers or issuing any more.
HMV has played a major role in Sheffield city centre for decades but has struggled in the battle against a growing internet and download culture.
The record store held discussions with its banks over the weekend but failed to agree on new terms for its debt.
A statement said: “The board regrets to announce that it has been unable to reach a position where it feels able to continue to trade outside of insolvency protection and in the circumstances therefore intends to file notice to appoint administrators to the company and certain of its subsidiaries with immediate effect.”
