Top university wages rising

SHEFFIELD University’s Vice-Chancellor Professor Sir Keith Burnett has enjoyed pay rises amounting to 36 per cent over the last five years, according to research by a Scottish academic.

Sir Keith’s increase was the highest in Yorkshire, well above the rate of inflation, according to Professor John Field at the University of Stirling.

Across Yorkshire, vice-chancellors’ salaries rose by 13.5 per cent over the same period - with Bradford and Leeds Metropolitan seeing cuts.

The number of university staff earning over £100,000 at Sheffield and at Leeds was also up slightly.

No figures were found to be available for Sheffield Hallam University, which has yet to publish its latest financial report.
