Three power into the finals
A GREEN energy business from Sheffield, a housing association project from Rotherham and Doncaster Council have been named as finalists for the Yorkshire and the Humber Microgeneration Partnership Awards.
Machon Bank-based Positive Footprint has been short listed in the Best Home Installation category of the awards for its installation of solar thermal and photovoltaic panels on a home in Sheffield which could provide enough power to meet the Fulwood home's energy requirements.
The array of photovoltaic panels is believed to be the largest domestic array in mainland Britain and the installation also includes an air source heat pump to provide hot water and battery back up system to cope with the home being without power for up to 40 hours.
South Yorkshire Housing Association has been short listed in the Best Development category for its eco-housing development on Henley Rise, in the Masborough area of Rotherham.
The 23 homes in the development have been described as comprising Europe's first 'Solar Street,' capable of generating almost 74KWp (kilo watts peak), which allows each property to generate enough renewable energy to offset more carbon dioxide than it creates.
And, Doncaster Council has been shortlisted for two awards - the Best Public Building Award and the Best Community Initiative Award.
The Council reached the finals of the Best Public Building Award with its renovation of Adwick leisure centre, which included the installation of a biomass boiler and has been short listed for the Best Community Initiative Award for its Ennerdale project, which involved converting a community heating scheme, serving 132 bungalows and 40 flats from a gas to a woodchip boiler.
Rosie Winterton, Minister for Yorkshire and Humber and MP for Doncaster Central will be guest speaker at the Yorkshire and Humber Microgeneration Partnership Conference and Awards.
She said: "Whether it's large-scale clean energy plants or smaller domestic systems, renewable energy is a vital component of the UK's diverse energy mix.
"Yorkshire and the Humber is well placed to play a full role in a low carbon economy. We have a proud history of energy production. Thanks to our geology, geography and a skilled and motivated workforce, we can continue this tradition as the world shifts towards more sustainable forms of energy generation.
