More than 2,500 people have applied for the 300 jobs at Supermarket group Asda’s new Sheffield store.

The store opens in Mosborough at the end of March – but Asda is still recruiting.

The company, part of US giant Walmart, is aiming to fill 255 part-time and 45 full-time positions in a number of departments.

Building work on the 44,000 sq ft store is well under way on the site of the former Home Décor sliding doors and storage systems business.

Mosborough store general manager Nick Whyte said: “We’re really proud to be opening our new store in Sheffield, creating more than 300 jobs and playing our part in the community.

“The number of job applications we have received so far is fantastic and we are still welcoming applications.

“We are excited to get the doors open in March and we are looking forward to meeting people from the local community.”

The Mosborough store will include a 29,000 square foot food hall and retail space selling a range of other products, including home, technology and fashion goods.

There will also be parking for 450 cars and the first Asda petrol filling station in Sheffield.

Plans are also being drawn up for the store to incorporate an Asda community centre.

Local organisations and people would be able to meet in the centre and customers will be able to decide which charities and groups they want the store to support.

Asda acquired the Mosborough site from Henderson Global Investors for £16 million last year, after Henderson enabled Home Décor to move to a new, 110,000 sq ft unit at Woodhouse Mill in Sheffield.
