AN increase in profits of £3 million has pushed Mexborough-based process plant manufacturer Charles Thompson to the top of the rankings of Doncaster’s most profitable SMEs.
In the 30 years since it was founded, the company has grown from a small fabricator, serving the local steel and coal industries to supplying major global companies in the pharmaceutical, chemical, oil and gas industries.
Charles Thompson boasts particular experience in making fabrications from corrosion resistant metals and alloys and has one of the UK’s largest purpose-built clean rooms for dealing with more reactive metals, such as zirconium, tantalum and titanium.
Former table topper Bawtry Carbon International, which is based at Austerfield, and makes cathodes and other carbon-based products, mainly for the aluminium industry, has left the table because it has grown too large to be considered an SME.
Meanwhile, Hi-Level Enterprises, the motorcycle spares wholesaler, which topped the Doncaster table from 2007 to 2010, retains its second place after increasing its profits by more than £800,000.
Doncaster Motor Spares Holdings had tripled its profits and risen three places to become the town’s third most profitable company.
The company, which trades under the name Motor Hog, auctions off cars, bikes, commercial and heavy goods vehicles and plant, in addition to selling parts and stereos recovered from vehicles that have been scrapped.
Since it was founded 73 years ago, it has grown to become one of the UK’s leading motor vehicle dismantling and salvage specialists, with the capability of dismantling and ‘de-polluting’ more than 200 vehicles a day.
Tickhill Engineering has also trebled its profits and risen six places, to fourth in the table.
The Armthorpe-based business, better known as Haith Tickhill, was formed 60 years ago and is now one of Europe’s leading manufacturers of machinery for handling root crops, including bulk handling, grading, washing, weighing, pre-packing and water treatment systems.
The business also includes Haith Industrial, which makes equipment that is used around the world for processing stone products and treating waste water.
New Top SMEs entrant One Call Insurance Services has seen profits rocket alongside a large increase in sales, resulting from targeted marketing and competitive pricing to round out the top five in Doncaster.
