The green light for eco-friendly PCs
Eco-friendly computer manufacturer VeryPC has smashed new energy consumption standards with its latest range of 'GreenPCs.'
The Sheffield company, which won an award for its "outstanding contribution to sustainable IT" earlier this week, says computers now being built at its Parkwood Road Business Park headquarters beat the new Energy Star 5.0 standard by between 38 and 71 per cent.
And, it is planning to introduce new energy saving innovations – including a facial detection system called 'PecoBOO,' which turns off your monitor when you turn away from your computer and back on when you turn back.
Public bodies, including government departments, schools, universities and hospitals are among VeryPC's leading customers and
European Union laws say all public bodies must use computers that meet the Energy Star standard and the new standard, which came in to effect on Wednesday, means the desktop PCs they use must consume less than 234 KWh of energy per year.
VeryPC says its latest GreenPC, the TT3V, which has 4 GB of RAM and an Intel quad core 2.83 GHz processor, has a Total Energy Consumption (TEC) of 109.2 KWh per year, beating the Energy Star 5.0 pass mark by over 50 per cent.
Managing director Peter Hopton is keen to emphasise that energy saving doesn't come at the expense of performance.
"We have no interest in building an energy efficient machine that is not fit for the job," says Mr Hopton. "All our GreenPCs are built to perform without compromise."
"I'm immensely proud to say that all of VeryPC's GreenPCs beat the Energy Star 5.0 standard by a significant margin, and in some cases by a factor of three.
"We never wanted to do just enough to comply with standards; we want to set the standard. By smashing the Energy Star 5.0 benchmark, we're setting an example to the rest of the IT industry."
In addition to winning the first SustainIT award at the UK Centre for Economic and Environmental Development's recent National eWell-Being Awards, VeryPC was also highly commended in the Environmental Innovation Award and won the Greening Data Centres Award for its Free GreenServer Initiative.
