A DEAL worth £7.3 million has been struck for the sale of Rotherham Council’s former town centre site which will be redeveloped as a Tesco Extra store.
The council has moved out of its former Civic, Norfolk House, Central Library and Arts Centre buildings on Nottingham Street to new accommodation.
The site has been sold to property company TCN UK, which has already secured planning permission for the store.
Construction of the 110,000 sq ft supermarket, 500 parking spaces and a petrol station is scheduled to start later this spring. As part of the project a series of road changes will also take place involving removal of the Centenary Way flyover, upgrading pedestrian crossings and improving access to Rotherham Transport Interchange.
Coun Gerald Smith, Rotherham Council cabinet member for environment, said: “We’re delighted to see such a major player investing in our town.”
