Superfast first

South Yorkshire's £90 million Digital Region initiative has gained its first domestic customer.

Ian Painter, from Grimethorpe, near Barnsley signed up for the superfast broadband connection with DRBSY, one of the first internet service providers to make use of the new Digital Region network, currently being built across South Yorkshire.

Mr Painter said: "Its impressively fast, at least 10 times faster than our previous connection. I'm reliant on the internet for work so this is making a big difference."

DRBSY's chief executive, George Taylor, says Mr Painter is able to download data from the internet at 38Mbps, close to the maximum download speed DRBSY is quoting and can upload data at 8Mbps.

The firm, which runs a data centre at Manvers, has hopes of beating the current record for the fastest residential broadband service.

"I'm happy with the super connection I have," says Mr Painter, "but I'm keen to be an even faster guinea pig."

n The Digital Region initiative aims to close a digital divide, which has left South Yorkhsire lagging up to seven years behind other parts of the UK, and open the door to hi-tech jobs and investment, along with revolutionary new internet-based services.

At the heart of the initiative is the installation of network of fibre optic cables from a main hub in Doncaster that will carry superfast broadband services to virtually every part of South Yorkshire.
