Two students from the University of Sheffield’s management school have won top prizes in the annual National Placement and Internship Awards.

Sophie Petrie, who is studying for a BA in Economics, was named Best Intern for her time with HSBC, while Danny McAllister, who is studying Business Management, received award for the Best Student Contribution to a Small or Medium-sized Enterprise

Sophie, who is 21, said: “I was absolutely thrilled to have won the Best Intern award.

“I knew the competition was fierce so to be recognised at a national award ceremony was overwhelming. I was very lucky that HSBC placed me in a department that challenged me and allowed me to experience life as an everyday banker with responsibilities, not just a summer intern.”

Danny, 22, added: “The reason I won was that I had created new streams of revenue for the company by creating, managing and expanding a new student travel company called The Buzz Student Travel.”

Awards were presented by Olympic medalist and former javelin world record holder Steve Backley, who is now a motivational speaker.
