Street market scoops accolade
ROTHERHAM’S street market has been recognised as one of the best in the country weeks after it was praised by a shopping guru.
The market scooped the best street or outdoor market of the year plaudit at a contest organised by the National Association of British Market Authorities.
Shopping guru Mary Portas - best known for TV show Mary Queen of Shops - said the ‘busting, lively’ Tuesday market had a future, unlike many across the country.
Rotherham Council member for town centres, economic growth and prosperity Coun Gerald Smith said: “We knew following the Mary Portas visit that we had got things right in Rotherham but to be voted the best in the whole country is a significant honour and one we are rightly proud of.
“A great deal is being done to ensure that Rotherham is an attractive place for all shoppers and this significant award should go even further to attracting people to this wonderful town.”
The market won in KPR Midlink ‘Market of the Year’.
It has grown from 24 stalls to 44, with a waiting list.
