Speedier trains set to link cities

JOURNEY times between Sheffield, Leeds and the West Midlands will be cut dramatically by the planned new high speed rail network, the Department for Transport has revealed.

Officials have released information showing that the fastest Sheffield to Birmingham journey times will fall from one hour 11 minutes to 38 minutes, and Sheffield to Leeds from 41 minutes to 17 minutes.

The quicker journeys to regional cities are in addition to a reduction in journey times between Sheffield and London, from two hours and seven minutes to one hour 15 minutes.

The Department for Transport is set to release details of the route of the high speed network north of Birmingham at the end of the month. It would not be open until 2032-33.
