Rail replacements on the Supertram network are set to move to a new location on Monday as work finishes near Hillsborough.

Trams to Middlewood and Malin Bridge had been replaced by buses for the past three weeks, but work is now set to move to the other end of the route.

Yellow route services will be reinstated tomorrow and blue route trams will travel between Halfway and Middlewood until returning to Malin Bridge on Monday.

But, from Monday, blue route trams will operate between Malin Bridge and Herdings Park, with a replacement B2 bus service operating between Gleadless Townend and Halfway.

The altered blue route means tram frequency at Herdings Park will increase from every 30 minutes to every 10 minutes.

Stagecoach has stressed trams will still operate between all other stops.

The works are set to last until about mid-May.

The scheme is the second phase of rail replacement, after almost 5,000 metres of track were improved between Spring Lane and Park Grange in 2013.

Stagecoach has discounted the price of a 13-week tram-only Megarider ticket from £131 to £95 in recognition of the disruption’s effect on passengers.

Margaret Kay, managing director of Stagecoach Supertram, said: “We’re delighted the rail replacement project is moving on to schedule and look forward to further improvements across the network. We’d like to remind passengers to check the website and information posters at stops so they know the latest rail replacement services that are in place.”

Julie Hurley, South Yorkshire Passenger Transport Executive Interim Director of Strategy, said: “Supertram is a vital part of the transport network in South Yorkshire and the rail replacement will help equip it to run smoothly for many years to come. Together with the new trams we have ordered for the network, passengers can continue to enjoy a first class service on Supertram.”
