SHEFFIELD is on track for a rail revolution over the next two decades, The Star can reveal.

The location for the city’s new high speed station - to open in 2033 - is to be confirmed today as Meadowhall.

The station will be linked to the rest of Sheffield by public transport improvements which are set to include a new Supertram line through the Sheaf Valley to Heeley, Millhouses and Dore.

Meanwhile, the existing Sheffield to London railway could boast the most modern trains in Britain, once it is electrified by the end of the decade.

And the fastest journeys between the two cities will be brought below two hours from December thanks to track improvements.

Homes and businesses on the route of the high speed line, which will skirt Beighton, Woodhouse, Tinsley and Wincobank, will be paid ‘generous’ compensation.
