Sheffield rivals’ bet could earn their stripes

Sheffield United fan Kevin Palmer and Sheffield Wednesday supporter Rob Pearce have struck an unusual bet with each other.

Sheffield United fan Kevin Palmer and Sheffield Wednesday supporter Rob Pearce have struck an unusual bet with each other.

IT’S looking likely a pair of Sheffield football rivals who made a bet at the start of the season to wear each other’s club shirts will have to grudgingly fulfill their promises.

Blades fan Kevin Palmer and Wednesdayite Rob Pearce pledged to wear each other’s shirts for the day if their rival clubs performed well.

Kevin said he’d peel potatoes for a day at Rob’s Fish and Chips on Main Road, Greenhill, if Sheffield Wednesday stayed up in the Championship, while Rob said he’d don a Blades kit to serve his customers if they were promoted from League One.

Kevin, aged 49, of Greenhill, said: “I know Rob well as he works in the local chippy and we always have a bit of banter about the football. It usually takes me about half an hour to buy my fish and chips.

“At the beginning of the season we decided to have this bet and it’s looking like either one or both of us will have to do what we promised.”

He added: “I can’t think of anything worse than wearing a Wednesday shirt - I’ll probably come out in a rash.”

Rob, aged 54, said: “The banter started last season really but at the start of this season we had this bet.

“I’m confident United won’t go up. I think I’ve got the best deal as Kevin will have to peel 3,000 potatoes if Wednesday stay up.

“He’s convinced that once I put a United shirt on it will turn me into a Blade but there’s no way on earth that’s going to happen.”

The football season finishes in April - and The Star will be sure to hold Kevin and Rob to their pledges.
