Sheffield airport backers meet

The meeting was organised by South Yorkshire Federation of Small Businesses at the Aston Hotel, Catcliffe.

Among those present were Gordon Millward the regional chairman of the FSB, Timothy Kirkhops, Tory Yorkshire and the Humber MEP, Sheffield Conservatives chairman Spencer Pitfield, and Lib Dem opposition leader on Sheffield Council, Coun Shaffaq Mohammed.

The Federation of Small Businesses and mystery backers are calling for redevelopment of the site to be put on hold, and for a public inquiry to assess whether the terminal could be viable if reopened.

Coun Mohammed said: “There were around 30 people at the meeting who wanted to give their views.”

Dr Pitfield, who stood unsuccessfully for the Tories in the Penistone and Stocksbridge parliamentary seat in 2010, added: “We are saying we would like the debate into the airport opened again.

“We think it is in the interests of the people of Sheffield for it to be assessed whether the airport is viable again.”
