Rotherham stores mark independence day

Shoppers and store owners are gearing up to celebrate the success of Rotherham’s varied independent retailers.

Friday’s event is in support of the national Independents’ Day campaign, which highlights the UK’s millions of independent retailers and promotes the importance of shopping locally.

Rotherham town centre offers everything from bespoke gifts to hair stylists, quirky clothes, homemade delicacies and a host of sweet treats.

On Friday, the town’s independent shop owners and market stall holders are inviting customers to get a taste of what the town has to offer and to sign up for a Shop Local discount card, giving access to offers at more than 100 Rotherham stores.

Coun Dominic Beck, Rotherham Council cabinet member for business growth and regeneration, said: “With more than 150 independent retailers, Rotherham offers a lot more than you would expect.

“From Corporation Street and Riverside Precinct to the myriad of shops at Imperial Buildings and High Street, across to the award winning historic markets complex, there’s something for everyone.

“It’s estimated that for every £1 spent locally, about 52p remains within the local economy, which is incredibly important.”

During the celebrations, Coun Maggi Clark, Rotherham deputy mayor, will be handing out awards to the town’s shops that scored platinum in a recent mystery shopper evaluation.

This year’s winners include Smith Bros – The Ring Shop, The Frame Gallery, Pinders School Wear, skateboard shop Props, Whistlestop Sweet Shop and Speedy Shoe Service.

Kara Chapman, owner of Whistlestop Sweet Shop, said: “Rotherham’s Independents’ Days show the pride and strong bond we have as shop owners and our determination to bring innovative products and ideas to our customers.”
