Aerospace giant Rolls-Royce’s plans to create hundreds of hi-tech jobs in South Yorkshire have cleared the first hurdle.

The plans, to build three new factories on the Advanced Manufacturing Park at Waverley, have won outline permission from Rotherham Council, opening the way for the first plant to be up and running before the end of 2013.

Rolls-Royce will now press ahead with drawing up detailed plans, which could be submitted for approval next year.

Rotherham Council cabinet member for town centres, economic growth and prosperity Coun Gerald Smith said: “I am extremely pleased that the application is in because this is really good news for both Rotherham and the whole region.

“This is obviously only the first step in Rolls-Royce’s exciting plans and sets in motion the development of yet another piece of the Advanced Manufacturing Park jigsaw.”

A Rolls-Royce spokesperson said: “The decision by Rotherham Council is a positive milestone in a long-term process. We are pleased to continue to make progress on our plans for the site.”

The Derby-based aero engine specialist says it wants to build two factories for itself, initially creating 360 jobs, and a third which could either be used by Rolls-Royce for further job creating investment or let to another occupier, possibly one of the firm’s suppliers.
