DONCASTER has seen a rise in the numbers of migrant workers arriving in the borough, according to new figures.

A report by Migration Yorkshire reveals the latest number of people from outside the UK being issued with national insurance numbers was 1.570, about 100 more than the previous year.

The 2010 figure is the most up-to-date statistic available, according to the publishers of Doncaster’s Local Migration Profile.

The report states: “The overall number of new migrant workers arriving in Doncaster in 2010 increased a little to 1,570; about 100 more than in 2009.

“This small change masks changes in arrival patterns, particularly a rise in arrivals from Latvia and Lithuania, partly offset by a decline in arrivals from Slovakia.

“On a smaller scale, there may have been increases from Iran and Nepal, and a decrease in arrivals from India.

“Poland remains the top country of origin, followed by Latvia and Lithuania.”

It describes a ‘fairly predictable’ flow of about 500 workers from other countries arriving each year, with the top country of origin being Iran.

The 2010 figure is less than the peak level of nearly 2,500, recorded in 2007.

At least 32 organisations based in Doncaster can employ migrants from outside the EU under the points-based system.

The report also reveals Doncaster is seeing less migration than other parts of Yorkshire.

The percentage of school pupils in the borough with a first language other than English is 6 per cent for primary schools and 4 per cent for secondary schools, compared to Yorkshire averages of 15 and 10 per cent respectively.

It adds taht net migration is expected to drop to fewer than 200 a year, as the Office for National Statistics expects immigration to fall and emigration to rise.

n Doncaster and Bassetlaw NHS Foundation Trust said the contribution migrants make to providing services was incalculable.
