Residents stronger together

HOUSEHOLDERS could save hundreds of pounds on their gas and electricity bills by joining South Yorkshire’s first collective energy switching scheme.

All residents in Barnsley, regardless of whether they own their own home or live in council or privately-rented properties, are eligible for the YORswitch Cheaper Energy Together initiative.

When many people group together, they can get energy companies to bid for the lowest price to win their custom.

Helen Jaggar, chief executive of housing management company Berneslai Homes, said: “This is an amazing opportunity for local residents to cut their energy bills during these tough economic times.”

Under the scheme, launching from April 9, energy companies will offer their cheapest energy deal based on the number of households that have registered.

Residents will then receive a personal offer showing how much money they could save.

In the first major UK collective switch, organised by a consumer magazine last summer, 37,000 people saved £223 a year.
