Rail contracts given to firms

THE first contracts have been awarded to companies as part of the development of the HS2 high-speed railway through South Yorkshire.

HS2 Limited has appointed civil engineering companies and an environmental survey firm for the second phase of the network which will run north of Birmingham.

AECOM has been given a £3.1 million contract to provide engineering services for the Birmingham to Leeds line, which calls at Meadowhall.

And Mott MacDonald has a £3.2m contract to ‘refine the route proposals’ after consultation.

Arup is being paid £1.1m for environmental services, for sound demonstrations to be used as part of the consultation into the new line.

Alison Munro, HS2 chief executive, said: “Our contracts for phase two will create thousands of jobs.”
