Positive moves in bid to back Don rail link

Plans to bring back passenger trains between Stocksbridge and Sheffield will be top of the agenda at a campaign meeting.

Supporters of the Don Valley Railway Project hold their annual general meeting at the Harlequin pub on Nursery Street, near Sheffield city centre, at 7pm on Wednesday, January 15.

The project’s target during 2014 is to fund and commission a detailed study showing how trains could be introduced.

The aim is to run trains to Stocksbridge and Deepcar using the current freight-only line serving the Tata steelworks from Woodburn Junction.

A study will look at whether services would be viable and what kind of vehicle should be used – tram or train, and whether to use electric, diesel or renewable power.

A petition backed by Stocksbridge Town Council is to be handed to Sheffield Council to demonstrate the scale of support for the scheme.

The meeting will also hear about two positive moves during 2013.

A strategy for the city centre has backed plans for new Supertram extensions while it was confirmed the Rotherham tram train extension and study will go ahead.

The Rotherham project will demonstrate whether or not tram train technology is viable on the route to Stocksbridge.

Spokesman Chris Bell said project supporters were pleased to see a passenger train back on the Don Valley Line recently.

“As well as the Don Valley Line, the train visited rail lines in Hull Docks and the freight-only South Yorkshire Joint line between Worksop and Doncaster.

“Unfortunately it was not easy for local people to be on board as the train picked passengers up at London King’s Cross and Peterborough only.

“We hope to see the day when passengers are regularly transported along this line again soon,” Chris said.

It is expected the new study will examine issues such as which stations trains would stop at and whether services should extend onto the wider rail network.
