Next generation broadband milestone close

SHEFFIELD is poised to pass another milestone on the road to becoming one of the first communities in the UK to benefit from the next generation of broadband communications links.

BT says that by the end of the month, exchanges in Sheffield providing 60 per cent of the city's 'phone and broadband services will support its pioneering 21st Century Network communications links. More than 117,000 lines will be upgraded as part of a multi-billion pound investment to provide the UK with the world's most advanced global communications platform, which will carry voice, data, video-on-demand and broadband services.

BT regional director John Anderson says the new network is an entirely new broadband service, not simply an improved version of what already exists.

"Sheffield is one of the first major communities in the UK to achieve this level of coverage," said Mr Anderson.

"It will play a major role in helping Sheffield and the region as a whole attract and retain inward investment. Most of the foundations are now in place for offering next generation broadband services, but of course it will take time for companies offering those services to introduce products taking full advantage of this major investment.

"We are working with these companies to move forward as quickly as possible."

The new network will allow broadband speeds of up to 20Mbit/s –more than double the maximum speeds currently available for more UK broadband users.
