DONCASTER is set for a housing boom after plans to build 83 new properties were given the go-ahead.
Members of the council’s planning committee rubber-stamped plans for the residential development on land off Doncaster Road and The Close in Branton. The approval is subject to a Section 106 legal agreement requiring affordable housing to make up part of the development.
The site is currently an overgrown area of land where a garage once stood on Doncaster Road.
Sixteen objections were received from neighbouring householders, raising issues including highway safety concerns regarding the access from Doncaster Road, parking problems and an increase in crime and anti-social behaviour.
Some members of the public were also concerned about the removal of trees.
The report stated: “The layout has been designed to minimise loss of privacy to neighbouring residential properties and within the development.
“All dwellings are two storeys and are a mix of detached, semi-detached and terraced houses.”
As part of the Coalition Government’s Housing Strategy for England, launched in November 2011, a Get Britain Building Fund has been made available to help kickstart stalled building sites around the country.
Doncaster Council is currently working with developers to identify sites that could be eligible to claim the financial assistance and therefore help to increase the amount of affordable housing stock within the borough.
The authority is also progressing its own new build programme, with a commitment to building a further 100 new homes during the next few years, and is developing a private landlord scheme helping to bring empty properties back into use.
A start date at Branton has not been fixed.
