Meeting about centre’s future

A PUBLIC meeting has been called by Stocksbridge Town Council to discuss proposals to close the town’s leisure centre.

The debate will take place on Monday, at The Venue, Manchester Road, between 7pm and 9pm.

The meeting follows a protest to be held outside the centre tomorrow from 10.30am, where hundreds of people are set to gather to demonstrate against its closure.

The leisure centre, on Moorland Road, is being proposed for closure by Sheffield Council as part of £50 million of cuts.

The authority says the building needs a £400,000 annual subsidy which works out at six times more per head than equivalent leisure centres elsewhere in Sheffield.

Subsidy at Stocksbridge is £3 per visit compared with 50 pence at Hillsborough, Sheffield Council said.
