Joshua Hoyland, from Sheffield, has become the 500th apprentice to be taken on by housebuilder Lovell.

The 18-year-old, from Crookes, has started a two-year plumbing course with Lovell, whose Sheffield operations are based in Don Road, Attercliffe.

Joshua said: “When so many young people are without jobs, I feel very lucky to be learning a craft while being paid.

“The support from Lovell has been fantastic and I know I am fortunate to have this opportunity to learn skills that will give me a lifelong trade.”

Lovell established its national apprenticeship programme in 2003 and an average of 60 craftsmen and women secure qualifications through the scheme each year.

The company has trained 161 carpenters, bricklayers, plumbers, roof layers, plasterers and painter and decorators in Yorkshire and the East Midlands during the past eight years.

Lovell’s Stewart Davenport said: “Joshua’s appointment marks a fantastic achievement and demonstrates our continuing commitment to delivering positive changes for people and communities.

“That’s our priority and the reason why we make the provision of jobs and training for local people central to our approach. Our dedicated apprenticeship scheme, was established nearly 10 years ago, to help create a new generation of highly skilled workers and to provide opportunities and ongoing employment in the communities where we work.”

Joshua’s appointment came at the start of National Apprenticeship Week.

A number of events marking National Apprenticeship Week are taking place in the region.

These include a drop-in event and round table discussion, organised by Sheffield Central Labour MP Paul Blomfield, which takes place in the Cutlers’ Hall on Friday.

The drop-in event runs from 10am to 1pm and is aimed at Small and Medium Sized Enterprises (SMEs).

It coincides with the National Apprenticeships Service’s launch of a dedicated service for SMEs which want help or advice on taking on apprentices.

For more information about the drop-in session, call: 0114 2722882 or email: paul.blomfield.mp@parliament.uk.

I would be interested to learn how many apprentices has housebuilder Lovell actually employed themselves.
