Lessons on how to tackle Lean times

Manufacturing bosses in Yorkshire are being offered the opportunity to hear how companies have improved their businesses to combat tough economic times at a series of meetings organised by business improvement specialists The Lean Consortium.

The free breakfast meetings kick off at the Kelham Island Industrial Museum in Sheffield on Thursday June 30.

Lee Green, operations manager at Timberworx will explain how the Lean Consortium transformed the businesses, which makes cabinets for premium audio speaker systems in the city, by engaging the workforce and slashing stock, costs and lead times to enable it to compete in difficult market places.

Timberworx is the UK's largest manufacturer of acoustic cabinets for the audio industry.

The firm, which has a two century history of cabinet making, was facing tough times before it transformed its working culture with the help of MAS and the Lean Consortium programme.

It has since diversified, making point of sale display equipment for retailers and products for schools, architects and local authorities.

John Macdonald, from the Lean Consortium, one of the consultancies approved by the Yorkshire and Humberside Manufacturing Advisory Service to advise local businesses taking part in Government-funded improvement programme, says many companies are surprised at how quickly they see bottom line benefits.

"The economic situation facing us is unprecedented, but one thing is for certain – it will be flexible, responsive companies whose entire staff focus on eliminating all forms of waste and providing great service who will come out of it best," said Mr Macdonald.

"The programme provides both fast benefits, which companies need just now, as well as the long-term staff engagement which is essential to maintain the improvements."
