Highways chiefs back down on parking plan

PEOPLE power has led to Sheffield Council scaling down plans to extend a permit parking zone on the edge of the city centre.
Proposals were drawn up to extend the Highfield zone, near Bramall Lane, to include the area bordered by Cherry Street, Queens Road and Woodhead Road.
The plans followed problems with commuters’ and football fans parked cars.
The situation has worsened since the current permit zone was established around the football ground - ‘dispersing’ motorists to park on surrounding roads.
However, after consultation with residents, Sheffield Council executive director Simon Green said several streets are now set to be excluded from the extension.
Residents of Colver Road, Highfield Place, Holland Place and Holland Road have had their streets removed from the plans after more than half who gave their views said they were against the permits.
One Colver Road resident told council officers: “Drivers already pay enough without having to pay to park outside their homes.”
Neighbours said there were no significant parking problems at present.
Sheffield Council charges residents £10 per year for one car and £30 for a second vehicle. Businesses are charged £30 and £60 for a second car or van.
Residents of other streets where the permit scheme is being extended said it would bring relief from commuter and football parking.
One Lancing Road resident, who voted in favour of the permit zone extension, said: “Our road is used as a car park from 7am to 6.30pm. When there is football on it becomes a car park again.”
The council has consulted heavily on new permit parking zones in recent years after criticism from some residents and businesses who felt the controls had been imposed without being asked for their say.
Changes have been made to existing zones such as Sharrow, including 15 minutes’ free parking to allow people to stop and use businesses more easily.
The Highfield extension is set to be approved at a meeting of the council’s cabinet highways committee on Thursday.
